In 1956, new forms of self defense were developed with the intent of up-dating traditional kata. Godokan goshin jutsu consists of two kata to be performed against an unarmed attacker and three kata against an armed attacker:
Unarmed close-in attacks by holding
Unarmed attack at a distance
Armed attack with a knife
Armed attack with a stick
Armed attack with a gun
Kime no Kata
Kime no Kata is intended to equip judoka with the basic methods of defence against unexpected attack. Kime no kata is separated into kneeling and standing techniques in the order set out below:
