Kata is the name given to the sequences of throws, grappling, choking and locking used in Judo training which combine to create modes of defence. There are several kata (or forms) in Judo which, once learnt, can be applied to one-on-one competition.
The nage no kata consists of five sets of three throws which are each performed on the right and left side of the body. This kata demonstrates a progression of attack styles with the judoka taking it in turns to attack and counter attack. The nage no kata is performed and progresses in the order set out below:
Te Waza (hand techniques)
Koshi Waza (hip techniques)
Ashi Waza (foot techniques)
Ma Sutemi Waza (rear sacrifice techniques)
Yoko Sutemi Waza (side sacrifice techniques)
