Kata
Kata is the name given to the sequences of throws, grappling, choking and locking used in Judo training which combine to create modes of defence. There are several kata (or forms) in Judo which, once learnt, can be applied to one-on-one competition.
Nage no kata (forms of throwing)
The nage no kata consists of five sets of three throws which are each performed on the right and left side of the body. This kata demonstrates a progression of attack styles with the judoka taking it in turns to attack and counter attack. The nage no kata is performed and progresses in the order set out below:
Te Waza (hand techniques)
- Uki otoshi - floating drop
- Seoi nage - shoulder throw
- Kata garuma - shoulder wheel
Koshi Waza (hip techniques)
- Uki goshi - floating hip
- Harai goshi - sweeping hip
- Tsuri komi goshi - lifting pulling hip
Ashi Waza (foot techniques)
- Okuri sshi harai - double foot sweep
- Sasae tsuri komi ashi - lifting pulling foot block
- Uchi mata - inner thigh throw
Ma Sutemi Waza (rear sacrifice techniques)
- Tomoe nage - stomach or circle throw
- Ura nage - back throw
- Sumi gaeshi - corner throw
Yoko Sutemi Waza (side sacrifice techniques)
- Yoko gake - side hook
- Yoko guruma - side wheel
- Uki waza - floating throw
