Meaning 'gentle or flexible way', Judo has been practiced as a sport and a martial art since its emergence in Japan in the late 19th century. Drawing on the philosophy of "maximum efficiency with minimal effort." the core element of Judo is competition with the Judoka (a student of Judo) seeking to bring their opponent to submission through the techniques of grappling, locking, pinning or choking. Judo is also practiced to improve fitness, as a form of physical exercise that develops stamina, strength and flexibility.
